Originally from The Big Onion, Kenny Alden left the Heartland to attend college inthe high desert of Arizona. But the scorching sun didn’t quite fry his brain; rather itseems to have baked his songwriting down a sinewy, lo-fi racket that is hard todeny. MELLOWS is completely of the moment, but like any record worth listening to– it is original while not being shy about some of its influences. Picking up on thedroney ripper vibes of fellow citizens like Disappears, Radar Eyes and Alex White, Magic Milk also sneak in a Waylon-like swagger – albeit one drenched in a pile ofreverb that sounds like it was picked up at the Creation Records fire sale.

But a sports car isn’t worth the rubber it’s sitting on if the engine doesn’t purr. On MELLOWS, all instruments are courtesy of Mr. Alden. But with a newly solidifiedline-up, the live version of this band is another animal altogether. Bassist Nick Spiese does a yeoman’s work holding this infectious cacophony down tight. While drummer Maggie Laleman keeps it moving straight ahead in a whirlwind of flailing limbs and abused tambourine.

While The Marble Vanity 7″ rips through the hearts and minds of everyone everywhere, one can only imagine what a full album would sound like…hmmm. Just wait until May!

And The Hussy’s debut LP is now sold out. The band came to Chicago this weekend and grabbed the last ten (we actually shipped the last one out today, thanks for waiting dude) and there are no fucking more left! The Hussy return to Chicago after breaking U of C and almost burning down Crown Tap. On September 1 they will headline that little venue in the barrio called Panchos. Not only will you be able to see the full force of Wisconsin through the visage of two degenerate savages with Melrose Place names like Bobby and Heather, but two of Chicago’s finest will be testing you testes as well. Since Birth broke up because that dude Mike is going to California to be a fucking doctor, sister band Den is now the defacto noise maker in the chuck city. Good thing they rule. Axis: sovA comes from another planet, one with all the terrible things our planet has like isolation, electricity and bath tubs, but with a groove unknown to this atmosphere…at least the post-1984 born atmosphere. The other two bands I don’t know, so sit and spin. Or show up for all and die by the time The Hussy kill.

Then, as if a Thursday of murder wasn’t enough, shit is gonna get weird at the Hideout on Saturday, September 3rd when Grimble Grumble announce their return to your face with a records release show for FIZZ03! We’ll be there selling the new record, September Sun, which has a limited number of colored vinyl available at the show.
